Waterford Farm has been in Kathryn West's family since the 1880's. It was originated by her grandfather, the very prominent Henry L. Martin Sr., a Civil War veteran who was captured in the war by Union Forces and repatriated in a prisoner exchange. Having served the Confederacy during the war as a cavalry officer, he later walked home from Appomattox after the defeat of Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. After the war, he began a very successful mule breeding and selling business which afforded him the opportunity to purchase the land that was to become Waterford Farm. In the 1980s, Dr. and Mrs. R. Smiser West's Waterford Farm became a premier commercial breeding operation that catered to the industry's top international clientele, including Mr. and Mrs. Bertram Firestone, H.H. The Aga Khan, Egon Weinfeld, Corbin Robertson and Eclipse Award winning breeder, Mrs. Henry D. Paxon. During that era, the farm's boarded bloodstock included such greats as FANFRELUCHE, BOLD N DETERMINED, GENUINE RISK, DARARA, MOON GLITTER, MOVIE GOER, OPTIMISTIC GAL, CANDYS BEST, COUNTLESS TIMES, REIGNING COUNTESS, COUNTESS FAGER, MILLIGRAM, MASARIKA, SHARAYA, TAKE WARNING, TABA and many, many others too numerous to mention. Any student of the breed will remember fondly these great champions and Grade I producers, each with a fascinating story behind them. Dr. West's famous partnership with Hall of Fame Trainer MacKenzie Miller included world class broodmares such as ROSETTA STONE, EURYANTHE, PASHAMIN and PRINTING PRESS, among others.

One such yearling was the special, record-priced DE LA ROSE. After gaining many years of valuable experience at Waterford Farm, Dr. West's son, Bob, began his own Millford Farm, a commercial operation bordering Waterford on three sides. Now that Waterford and Millford have combined into one great facility, Mrs. Kathryn West's Waterford Farm returns to glory as a full commercial breeding operation under the banner of Waterford-Millford Farm, owned in part and operated by her son, Bob.
